Experts Meet to Discuss Water Security in GCC States and Yemen

The National Water Center at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) organized an experts meeting to discuss the present and future of irrigation water in GCC States and Yemen titled: Towards a Long Term Strategy on Water Security.

The meeting was held in collaboration with the British Council and Cranfield University with the participation of experts from UAEU, Cranfield University, University of West of England, Sana'a University in Yemen and Sultan Qaboos University in Oman. During his welcome speech, Prof. Peter Werner, Dean of College of Science,  highlighted the importance of water as one of the major biological issues of interest with specialists and politicians across the world.

It was discussed during the meeting the need to conduct research on Water Security in the UAE, Oman and Yemen, in addition to building accessible resources in those countries to meet their needs.

Dr. Ahmed Murad, Associate Professor in Hydrogeology said, "The study will focus initially on Yemen, Oman and UAE. In order for this proposal to achieve its objectives, three Ph.D. students will be selected to conduct the research and will be supervised by researchers and faculty members from the universities participating in this study."

"This meeting is also a follow up from our last seminar held in Muscat, Oman on Water Security, to update on the implementation of the seminar outcomes and to submit a research proposal to the British Council or any sponsoring authority to fund the project," he added.

Officials from the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture, Al Ain Municipality and Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority also attended this meeting.
