UAEU Receives DAST Award for Their Contribution to Sustainable Transport
A graduate student and faculty form United Arab Emirates University(UAEU) received an award for their academic research and contribution to sustainable transport at the fifth edition of the Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport initiated by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), which honors the efforts of public and private sector organizations who have contributed to reducing traffic congestion while improving the environment.
The award was given for their work entitled, “The Effect of Oncoming Car Headlights on Pedestrian Visibility, a study to find ways to reduce pedestrian related accidents. The research team consisted of Lead investigator: Dr. Riad Saraiji, Architectural Engineering Department, Co-investigator: Professor Mouhamad Madi, Statistics department, Associate Dean of the College of Business and Economics and Graduate Student: Dana Younis, Department of Architectural Engineering.
The number of submissions received this year increased from 28 in 2008 to a total of 89 in 2012. The award ceremony was held under the auspices of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council.
Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, along with Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA presented the award to Dr. Riad Saraiji. Dr. Saraiji said, “It is an honor to receive this award on behalf of UAEU. This award is recognition of the university’s commitment to harness its research capabilities to serve the country and higher education. I take this opportunity to thank the university for their support.
Prof. Mohamed Yousif Baniyas, Provost, UAEU, praised the efforts and achievement of the research team and reiterated the standing of the university as a research intensive university of International stature committed to the development of the UAE.”
