UAEU Law Seminar Marks the 10th Anniversary of the International Criminal Court

 The College of Law at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) organized, with close collaboration with the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, a one-day seminar on “the Law and Practice of the International Criminal Court: Achievements, Challenges, and Prospects”.

The seminar marked the 10th Anniversary of the International Criminal Court. The event was led by prominent experts from the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, the Hague Institute, and the United Nations Development Program.   The event had a large turnout representing public officials as well as universities, NGOs, national and international legal research organizations, legal practitioners, and students of the UAEU. H.E. Dr. Ali Rashid Al Noaimi, UAEU Vice Chancellor, made opening remarks emphasizing the importance of raising awareness on the pivotal role of the international criminal court.

Furthermore, this seminar strengthens the efforts of the UAEU to tie the theoretical approach to the practical applications and allow the faculty members as well as the students to draw valuable lessons in servicing the Emirati community.

The seminar engaged discussions through the panels of experts and focused on the following themes:

  •  The Legitimacy and Jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court
  •  The International Criminal Court and the Arab World

Among the key speakers were: Mr. Paolo Lembo, United Nations Director for the Regional Center for Arab States and United Nations Development Program Resident Representative for the UAE; Mr. Lembo has been with the United Nations system for the last twenty-five years of his professional life.   Dr. William Wiley, Director, Tsamota Ltd. which oversees the provision of training in the application of International Criminal and Humanitarian Law technical assistance. Dr. Wiley has fifteen years’ experience as a practitioner in the field of International Criminal and Humanitarian Law (ICHL).

Dr. Michael Bochenek, Director of Law and Policy at Amnesty International. Dr. Bochenek is director of law and policy for the International Secretariat of Amnesty International.

Dr. William Gueraiche, International Relations expert and Professor of Social Sciences at American University in Dubai; for several years, Dr. Gueraiche has been working in Geopolitics, particularly the Geopolitics of Asia.
