UAEU Graduates First Therapy Professionals

The first batch of graduates of Applied Psychological Skills and Competencies in Mental Health will be graduating this week from the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). It is the first and only program of its kind in the country and the region  that is geared towards acquiring therapeutic skills for the assessment and treatment for both mental health and or substance abuse. It focuses on acquiring competencies in the most advanced and state-of-the-art therapeutic modalities.

This 12 months program was coordinated by United Arab Emirates University in collaboration with The National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) in Abu Dhabi and is primarily a skills based program aimed at  workers in the Health, Mental Health and Substance Misuse Treatment Fields.  This include; psychologists, social workers, counsellors, psychiatrists, family physicians, nurses, etc. The aim is to enhance their clinical skills and to contribute directly to their work experience resulting in  better outcomes.

Among the 15 graduates of the first batch, there are 13 UAE national women mental health professionals (primarily in psychology) who are mostly alumni of UAEU. Dr. Ossama Tawakol Osman, Program Director and Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at CMHS said, “This program is a major contribution to the community and towards continued career development for National Emirati Women. The program faculty are world experts in their field of different types of Psychotherapies.”

Professor Mohamed Yousif Baniyas, UAEU Provost & Chief Academic Officer, said “UAEU reinforces its commitment to continuing education and professional development through such program offerings which is in line with the strategic plan of the University to further develop the nation.”
